it is an outstanding composition on Natural Calamities of Bangladesh for all classes of students.
The natural calamities of Bangladesh
Bangladesh is a land of natural calamities. Here flood, cyclone, drought, famine, river erosion, heavy down-pour, landslide ETC destroy the life and property every year. People have to live here fighting against the frequent natural calamities. So, ours is a life of great challenge indeed.
There are many causes of natural calamities which are mostly manmade. the world climate is undergoing a rapid and major change day by day with a negative effect for human habitation on earth. This change in climate is giving rise to a dreadful effect called green house effect. This greenhouse effect is increasing the heat in the atmosphere and releasing poisonous gas all around. It is most dreadful for human as well as other living beings. This gas is largely being emitted by the industrially developed countries of the world. They are emitting this gas more than 70-80 times of the developing countries like ours. The result is that we, the people of developing countries, are getting victims year after year and suffering deadly with the loss of heavy toll of lives and properties due to natural disasters. In this way, our lives and properties are now quite at a stake for the unwise and whimsical activities of the advanced countries. We are now just left to the mercy of these countries for our survival on earth. River erosion is mostly caused by nature but some human activities sometimes cause river erosion. Sometimes, some greedy people unwisely excavate the hilly areas and cause heavy landslide.
Among all these natural calamities, floods and cyclones are very common. They visit our country almost every year. Floods in our country are caused in many ways. Among them heavy rainfall during the rainy season and rush of water from the upper north are the main causes of flood. It causes sudden increase of water in the rivers and canals which overflow their banks and cause flood. Sometimes violent cyclones, tidal bores, tsunami and melting of snow on mountains cause devastating floods.
Flood causes huge loss of our life and property and brings catastrophic sufferings to the people of the country. The crop fields, houses, roads and streets go under water. Standing crops and vegetables are damaged and millions of people become homeless. They face the scarcity of SSfood, drinkable water, shelter and suffer much. Epidemic and famine break out to add to the misery and suffering of the flood affected people.
Cyclone is another natural calamity in our country. It revolves violently round a centre, advances rapidly and hits the offshore islands and mainland. During the last few years, several devastating cyclones hit Bangladesh and caused immense harm to the people. This weather condition is a curse, especially to the people of coastal areas of Bangladesh.
Cyclones in Bangladesh usually originate from the Bay of Bengal and blows to the mainland with tidal bore. It is often associated with thunders and heavy showers. It takes away the lives of many people and animals. It destroys houses, properties, crops and trees. It also creates the scarcity of food and spread different kinds of diseases like diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, fever etc. in all the affected areas.
drought is another natural calamity in Bangladesh. It occurs in summer. It causes damage to crops almost every year. The chopping of trees at random is the main cause of drought. The irrigating system is not much developed in our country. So, drought is damaging the economic base of Bangladesh and affecting the ecological balance of the country.
Every year many peple of Bangladesh are affected by river erosion. Many rivers wash away their banks. So, millions of people loss their houses, cultivable lands, cattles ETC. even schools, colleges, offices, roads and highways near the rivers are damaged because of river erosion.
Landslide is another natural calamity of Bangladesh. sometimes some hills collapsed and cause loss of lives and properties.
Though Bangladesh is in the danger zone of natural disasters, we can take preventive measures to lessen it’s destruction and loss. However, the losses of cyclones can be reduced to some extent by using modern technology of weather forecasting and prior warning. Flood can also be prevented by building of embankments and barrages and by developing a well-planned irrigation system. The river beds should be dredged for carrying more water by the rivers. River erosion can also be controlled by making sustainable dams and making forest around the bank. Even tree plantation is another way to lessen river erosion. Unwise excavation must be stopped to to reduce landslide and it’s loss.
In fine, the people of Bangladesh have no option but to live here fighting against all kinds of natural calamities as they have nothing to do against these natural calamities. Moreover, since there is no ways to stop these natural calamities, the government should take effective measures to mitigate the sufferings of the victims.
