A Dialogue Between Two Friends About Illiteracy in Bangladesh or, How To Eradicate Or Remove It From Our Society

suitable for high to intermediate level

Monir    : Hi Sakib, how are you?

Sakib    : I’m fine. And you?

Monir    : I’m fine too. But I’m thinking about a great problem of our country.

Sakib    : Which are you speaking of?

Monir      : It is our illiteracy problem. What’s your opinion?

Sakib  : Yes. It is a great problem as well as a curse for the country.

Monir : How? What kind of problem does it create?

Sakib: Because without education no nation can develop. Ignorance creates

Many other problems . Even illiteracy hinders all other development efforts.

Monir: Hmm. It makes a nation paralyzed. Even an illiterate nation can not stand upright amongst the other nation of the world.

Sakib: Exactly so. It also increases poverty and unemployment problem.

Monir: Illiterate people are not aware of their basic rights, needs, human rights and what not.

Sakib: Gender discrimination is very severe within this kind of society. None can enjoy their freedom in an illiterate society.

Monir: What is the way to get rid of such curse?

Sakib: The way is nothing other than building up an educated nation.

Monir: That’s true. We have to take drastic efforts and launch effective programs to encourage the mass people for education.

Sakib  : We should work hard hand in hand to educate the illiterate.

Monir: Obviously. Without united efforts we can not remove this curse from the lot of this nation.

Sakib: It’s a great thing that some necessary steps already have been taken by the government and nongovernment sector.

Monir : We also need to create people’s awareness so that they can  send their

children to school.

Sakib  : Yes, of curse. It’s the key factor. Our government has already made education compulsory for all

to remove illiteracy.

Monir: Books are being provided free of cost every year up to class ten.

Sakib: Female students are getting stipend for bearing their educational expenses.

Monir : We must co-operate with the govt.

Sakib  : Yes, we must come forward in this regard.

Monir : But there are some people in our society who are very poor. They are

unwilling to send their children to school owing to poverty.

Sakib :  Indeed! It’s quite so. To persuade the poor people to send their

children to school the government has also started ‘Food for

Education’ programme.

Monir : Yes, it is an epoch-making step.

Sakib  : But the govt. alone can not solve the problem. Every educated person

including students must come forward to educate the illiterate.

Monir : Of course. To make the program a success we must co-operate each

other.

Sakib  : If we are sincere in our words and deeds, nothing is impossible.

Monir : That’s right. Thank you.

Sakib  : Ok. See you again.
