Adjective
Definition: the words which are used to qualify or modify a noun or a pronoun expressing their quality, number, weight, situation or condition called adjective.
Ex: 1. The girl looks very tired.
Ex: 2. They are very funny.
Ex: 3. We have purchased a luxurious house.
Ex: 4. Good students will do well in the exam.
Ex: 5. she is very bad.
Position of adjective:
[a] an adjective can be used at the beginning of the sentence.Ex: 1. Bad boys can not shine in life.
Ex: 2. Some mangoes are green here.
[b] sometimes an adjective can be used at the end of the sentence.
Ex: 1. Today is very hot.
Ex: 2. The books were interesting.
[c] most of the time, adjectives are used before a noun but after pronoun.
Ex: 1. he is an outstanding person.
Ex: 2. I am so serious.
[d] an adjective can also be used after To Be verb. Even they can be used after the words, feel, taste, become, look seem, etc.
Ex: 1. It becomes very noisy.
Ex: 2. My father is an honest man.
Classification of adjective:
adjective is divided in to four parts. [a] adjective of quality [b] adjective of quantity [c] adjective of number [d] pronominal adjective.
[a] adjective of quality or simple adjective: the words or adjectives which are normally used to qualify a noun or a pronoun is called adjective of quality or simple adjective. It normally denotes the quality or condition of a thing, being, animal and place.
Ex: 1. This person is a mental patient.
Ex: 2. I like green vegetables.
Ex: 3. Bangladesh is very charming to look at.
[b] adjective of quantity: the adjectives which are used to measure a noun or pronoun is called adjective of quantity.
Ex: 1. There is a little water in the pond.
Ex: 2. I need not much money.
Ex: 3. Some people are making hurly burly.
[c] adjective of number: the adjectives which are used to count any noun or pronoun numerically called adjective of number.
Ex: 1. I have only ten taka.
Ex: 2. He has stood first in the exam.
Ex: 3. Firstly, we should not disobey our parents.
Ex: 4. Normally, we took meals thrice a day.
Types of adjective of number:
adjective of number is also divided in to three kinds. [a] cardinal adjective [b] ordinal adjective [c] multiplicative adjective.
- cardinal adjective: the adjectives which only expresses number is called cardinal adjective.
Ex: [a] fifty miles is not a great distance.
- Ordinal adjective: the adjectives which normally expresses the sequence or serial is called ordinal adjective.
Ex: [b] He is the second boy in our class.
- Multiplicative adjective: the adjective which are used to multiply a noun or a pronoun are called Multiplicative adjective.
Ex: [c] I will give you two times interest if you borrow me some money.
[d] Pronominal adjective: the adjectives which have originated from pronoun called pronominal adjective.
Ex: 1. I like her song.
Ex: 2. My brother is a doctor.
Ex: 3. Whose car are you using?
Types of pronominal adjective
Pronominal adjective is also divided in to four classes. Such as,
1 demonstrative adjective 2 distributive adjective 3 interrogative adjective 4 possessive adjective.
- demonstrative adjective: if demonstrative words are used before a noun, they are called demonstrative adjective.
Ex: [a] This country is very small.
Ex: [b] those fruits are really tasty.
- distributive adjective: when distributive words are used before a noun is called distributive adjective.
Ex: [a] each boy has got a prize.
Ex: [b] any man can be succeeded by hard word.
- interrogative adjective: when interrogative words are used before a noun or a pronoun to ask a question called interrogative adjective.
Ex: [a] whose pen is this?
Ex: [b[ What class do you read in?
- Possessive adjective: the possessive pronouns which are used before a noun to modify it is called possessive adjective.
Ex: [a] my sister is a doctor.
Ex: [b] your school is very large.
Ex: [c] Our parents love us very much.
